The Democratic Party of the United States is the oldest political party in the world by far.  Some would suggest the Democratic Party is also the most successful political party at any time over modern history. It led the United States, in largest part, from near its beginning into becoming the sole superpower on the planet.

Democrats have held a majority in one or both houses of Congress for 124 years of the past 188 years.  There have been 15 Democrats elected to the Presidency serving 92 years in office, including 16 of 24 years through 2016.  Democrats today control 41 of 99 state legislative chambers along with 18 governorships.   Of US voters, 40% favor or lean toward the Democratic Party outpacing Republicans considerably at their 34% of the national vote.

The heroes of the Democratic Party dominated politics in their time from Andrew Jackson to Woodrow Wilson to Franklin Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy.  Democrats held power in Washington through both 20th Century world wars, during the Great Depression, the Vietnam War and during much of the Cold War.

How the West Got Hooked On “Humanitarian War”
3/4/15 Washington Blog

The “Humanitarian War” In Yugoslavia Set the Stage for Subsequent “Humanitarian” Interventions in Libya, Syria and Other Nations

The first “humanitarian war” in the post-Cold War era was in the Kosovo, Bosnia and Serbia regions of Yugoslavia (Croatia and Slovenia were regions of Yugoslavia which also played into the war).

Wikipedia notes:

Humanitarian bombing is a phrase referring to the 1999 NATO bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (24 March – 10 June 1999) during the Kosovo War …. The closely related phrase humanitarian war appeared at the same time.

Indeed, the war in Yugoslavia set the pattern for all subsequent “humanitarian wars” … in Libya, Syira, Nigeria (think Boko Haram), and elsewhere.  Story

US LAWYERS: Corralling the Thundering Herd

Q: What's the difference between a catfish and a lawyer?
A: One's a slimy scum-sucking bottom-dwelling scavenger; the other is a fish.

Taking his seat in chambers the judge faced the opposing lawyers saying “I have been presented by both of you with a bribe,” the judge began while both lawyers squirmed uncomfortably.   “You attorney Blowhard gave me $15,000 and you attorney Pompous gave me $ 10,000.   The judge reached in his pocket and pulled out a check, which he handed to Blowhard. “Now then, I’m returning $5,000 and we are going to decide this case solely on its merits.”

It was so cold last week that I saw several attorneys with their hands in their own pockets.  Story

Blogger Ben's Basically Full Of It
ZeroHedge Post 5/5/15 David Stockman

Ben Bernanke’s skin is as thin, apparently, as is his comprehension of honest economics. The emphasis is on the “honest” part because he is a fount of the kind of Keynesian drivel that passes for economics in the financially deformed world that the Bernank did so much to bring about.

Just recall that he first joined the Fed way back on 2002 after an academic career of scribbling historically superficial and blatantly misleading monographs about the 1930s. These were essentially zeroxed from Milton Friedman’s monumental error about the cause of the Great Depression. In a word, Friedman and Bernanke pilloried the Fed for not going on a bond buying spree during 1930-1932 and thereby stopping the shrinkage of money and credit.  Story

As part of the federal budget deal last week, Congress exercised its wisdom for the benefit of Washington, DC residents when it entirely reversed the city’s voter referendum approving the legalization of cannabis in the city to be regulated in a way similar to alcohol sales.  Legalization had been approved in November by the DC voters by a margin of 68-32.

Now, Washington DC is apparently the only place in the United States where federal cannabis prohibition is mandatory.  Even the medical use of cannabis, also previously approved by voters in DC, appears to now be a serious federal crime again.

Bipartisanship in Congress only applies to the big picture, like in bankrupting the nation, endless warfare and, in this instance, the suppression by brute force of a plant that has been in use for 6000 years or longer.

The fact though this measure had to be pushed by Congressional leadership into a must-pass budget bill is indicative of how poorly the federal government’s century long war on weed has gone over the past two decades.  The giddy days of Ronald Reagan are long over.  Complete surrender has already occurred in three States.  All of the remaining 47 States are in play politically for legalization or a lesser liberalization.  Story

Death of Lee Kuan: Author of the Greatest Financial Rise in World History: Singapore, Lee Kuan's Economic Miracle
National Review 5/25/15 Thomas Sowell

His legacy is a testament to the power of capitalism to transform people’s lives exponentially for the better. It is not often that the leader of a small city-state — in this case, Singapore — gets an international reputation. But no one deserved it more than Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of Singapore as an independent country in 1959, and its prime minister from 1959 to 1990. With his death, he leaves behind a legacy valuable not only to Singapore but to the world.

The Forgotten Constitutional Freedom

A Dearth of Rationality

In the United States the steady passage of new federal laws and official regulations for eighty years has created a crazy quilt of often contradictory prohibitions, subsidies and legal rights.  The United States Code now fills two long bookshelves with the Code of Federal Regulations occupying twice that shelf space in the law library.
